This paper presents an example of educational innovation at the UNED aimed at integrating an international dimension into distance learning on water treatment. In a module within the Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Sciences, a recorded interview with a Nigerian student was incorporated to analyse water purification practices in her country. The resource, accessible asynchronously, enabled students to learn about different technological and regulatory contexts, fostering critical thinking and the comparison of systems. The activity was complemented by a discussion forum that facilitated reflection on sustainability and access to water. The results show a positive evaluation and highlight the potential of this approach for developing intercultural and global competencies in distance higher education.
